Watercolor Botanical Illustration ~ Hummingbird

  • This will be a guided lesson. We will have a warm-up using watercolor, practising washes and brush strokes. We will then begin by completing an outline of the bird, applying base colors, and using fine detail to illustrate. We will create the illusion of texture using a wet on dry  technique. The students will learn how to create different textures, mix watercolors, apply washes, and learn the techniques of nature illustration. Before photography was a common, affordable hobby, naturalists and the common man alike would document their findings and the wonders of nature with a small watercolor kit and illustration pad which they'd carry with them everywhere especially when they went on their journies. Revive this soul enriching hobby and share this gift with friends. Overall objectives:

    • Analyze nature as an art form
    • Apply watercolor techniques such as washing, shading, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry
    • Illustrate textures found in nature
    • Create color studies
