Learn to play the HARMONICA !! Level I or Level II

First, this class is a BLAST !  You'll be having fun you forgot you could have !!  It just makes you feel good to be breathing, just like singing makes you feel good.  Anyone can pick up a harmonica and blow on it, and if you're good, you can slide back and forth and make some scaley notes...Buuut, can you play it for real, along with the music? 

You will after you learn from our maestro.  In these fun and relaxing sessions you'll learn how to hold it, embouchure or mouth placement, essential rhythms, common cords, when to draw, when to blow, You'll be practicing and playing along right away to popular tunes of all styles and gaining confidence, learning special effects and understanding how the HARMONICA fits into a musical band or ensemble, not just your pocket ! 

 

You'll need a 10 hole harmonica in the key of C.  Please don't bring a larger or fancier one, as it will be confusing for you in these lessons.

A good one is $20 or less on line, but we recommend the EAST TOP harmonica on Amazon for $19.95.  

Also, please bring a folder for your lessons/papers.  Maybe a pen for notes.

 

Phil Zukas, our jazz pianist, studied music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition to being an accomplished solo player, he has accompanied vocalists, worked with small and large combos, and conducted and played with bands in a variety of settings. Phil began teaching piano, electric keyboard and organ to students of all ages and abilities in 1981. Since that time, he has also advanced a career in the field of human services. Phil has performed traditional classical works, as well as a variety of contemporary styles, including jazz, blues, rock n’ roll and improvisation. He has also enlarged his musical experience by taking up the banjo and most recently, the ukulele and he's a secret Harmonica star.  He currenty resides in New Bedford and commutes to Boston daily for work !  Playing piano is his happy place when he gets home.  

Have your GPS take you to 101 West Rodney French Blvd. in New Bedford.  When you see the sign for GLOBE FURNITURE, start looking for parking.  We are on the end of the building AWAY from the main entrance.  You'll see an ORANGE rimmed door with our big yellow NBACE sign over it...enter there and go up the stairs.  At the top of the stairs on the second floor...follow small yellow signs for NBACE.  We're right around the corner behind the mural  !!  If you decide not to follow these directions, you may end up wandering the halls of the Kilburn Mill labyrinth for all eternity.
