Watercolor ~ Autumn Leaves ~ 1 Day Workshop !!
This is an excellent way to begin to learn to paint with watercolor. You won't believe your eyes, as the leaves come to life on the paper in front of you !! Working from real autumn leaves, you'll recreate the beauty of nature and become hooked on the results. You'll learn to SEE the details and wait until the very end to add them. It's so much fun learning the process while making the product. You'll practice watercolor techniques and approaches to get different effects by using various methods such as wet on wet, bleeding, wet on damp and pre wetting. You'll review basic color mixing and viscosity, pigment to water ratios, brush strokes, and application, you'll even learn some tricks of the trade, like scratching, scraping, spraying, flicking etc. which will enhance your paintings. You'll also become adept at identifying which are the best brushes for the job along with color studies and composition.
Karen Charbonneau Zukas is a graduate of Tufts university and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with a master’s degree in education from Western New England University and was a pupil of Barnet Rubenstein (pupil of Oscar Kokoshka). She is a recognized portrait painter and potter and former columnist for the Bulletin in Boston. She has been teaching various subjects, primarily advanced ESL, fine art history, painting, drawing, clay and print making as well as writing, test prep, debate and humanities; at universities, preparatory, public, private and international schools and community ed in Boston for over 35 years and now locally. She and her family moved back to the south coast in 2013. She is the proprietor of Peasantware Pottery in New Bedford and the founder of The New Bedford Art and Cultural Emporium at Kilburn !
We'll supply all the materials for this workshop. For future knowledge. Use whatever watercolor materials you have. If you need to get them, I recommend Ocean State Job Lot, you can get them on Amazon or at Michaels or Jerrys Art o Rama, please purchase:
Paints, whether tubes or cakes in varying colors or a kit of colors. The paints for a beginner do not have to be name brand or expensive, the paper on the other hand you must have good paper.
Paper, a small pad will do of Watercolor paper, Canson or Arches or Strathmore 9 x 12 is good, or larger if you'd like. DO NOT buy cheap watercolor paper. It is worthless and you will be very disappointed.
Clear plastic kitchen flexible cutting board (usually sold in pack of 3) to be used as a
Watercolor brushes in varying shapes and sizes.
Paper towel (you don't have to bring a roll, you can grab 5 or 6 per week.
Pencil, Eraser, Sharpener
Masking tape
cheap Palette
These are the fundamentals...other helpful tools are small spray bottle, sea sponges, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, tissues, small container of rubbing alcohol, kosher salt etc. Not super necessary, but eventually you may want to have some of them.
Have your GPS take you to 101 West Rodney French Blvd. in New Bedford. Once there, please park on the end of the building AWAY from the main entrance. You'll see an ORANGE door that says Mattress Handup...enter there and go up the stairs. At the top of the stairs...follow small yellow signs for NBACE. We're right around the corner behind the mural !!
